Minutes of Johnson County Herb Society Meeting Saturday, February 17, 2007.
Esther chambliss. President called meeting to order. She turned the floor over to Nancy Hagwood.
Nancy explained the raffle to new members and visitors and displayed the day's door prizes. She encouraged those interested in making their ticket purchases to come forward and do that at this time.
While tickets were being purchased Esther took the floor and demonstrated one of the current magazines on herbs, distributed handouts, and discussed local gardening events that are coming up and available to us.
At this time she started off on the discussion of the Herb of the Year, "Lemon Balm". Several people contributed interesting facts about the popular herb. A good web site for such information is http://www.herbalextractsplus.com/lemon-balm.cfm
Esther displayed the new fundraising item she had made for us to start sales of raffle tickets. It is a garden utensil holder and wall hanging. Tickets will be on sale and it will be displayed at the Master Gardeners Show. It is proposed we draw for the winner at our meeting the following Saturday. Tickets will again be a dollar each or 6 for five dollars. The fund raiser will be on display at Sue Morgan's Hair Salon daily until the Master Gardeners Show March 10th.
Guests/visitors were recognized: Pat's sister Clydie Scarbrough, Sherrie's dad Richard Russo, and Ethel Henry's daughter Elizabeth Henry.
Further business was tabled until after our luncheon and the speaker's presentation. We were instructed to help ourselves to the luncheon and Patti Lockhart, Master Herbalist, presently residing in Keene, Tx. was introduced as our spearker for the day.
Patti spoke on the uses of Rosemary. She had a handout out with some of the information she covered on the herb and a place to take notes as she discussed it. She also had bundles of the herb for each person to enable them to recognize it and enjoy its fragrance. She passed around a salve made from petroleum jelly and rosemary oil said to be excellent for congestion. Soaps and shampoos are good for encouraging hair growth and stimulation of healthy hair. She recommended books "Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicene" by Daniel Mowery and "An Elder's Herbal" by
David Hoffman. She also recomended it for decorative purposes, showing us how to make a small wreath and told us of serveral ways it could be used instead of pine in our Christmas decorations. She said it was useful as a calming tea with two or three teaspoons of fresh leaves to a cup of hot water. The floor was then opened for questions and when everyone was through Esther presented a gift from the society to the speaker.
The drawing for our door prizes was done with a calendar going to Sherrie's dad and the potted plant and soil to Pat Chapman and the basket of Herbal Sewing items to Pat as well.
The meeting was called back to order to discuss the rest of the business for this month. Esther explained we would have a booth as a non profit organization in the upcoming Master Gardener Show. If anyone had items they would like to include in our booth she suggested they pay a fee of $3 dollars for a small space in our booth. Pat Kreiner passed out information sheets and complimentary tickets on the show. She explained if we wore our Society logo shirt we could get in free and pass our tickets on to friends.
Esther brought up that there had not been a motion or vote as to whether we would or would not have a Garden Show this year. Sue Morgan made the motion that we were not to have a show the June 2007 to May 2008 year. Debra seconded. Vote- All in agreement.
Pat made a suggestion we look into setting up as a booth or table to sell our store goods and advertise membership in our organiztion at several of the local happenings such as Iris Show. This was discussed but no decision was made at this time.
Esther said it was time for an executive board nominating committee to be appointed. She pointed out that a member of the present board had to reside as the chair of the committee and only Debra and Micki were the only ones that had not already served in the most recent years. She suggested that Debra and Micki serve as co-chairs and then Pat Chapman, Sherrie Stanford, and Sally Porter make up the other members of the committee; making a committee of five as laid out in the by-laws. A motion to accept these members as the nominating committee for the upcoming year was made by Debra Moore, Seconded by Pat Chapman. Vote- All in agreement.
Debra took the floor and said she had been checking into a field trip to a local winery and polled the membership to see if we would be interested in this as a meeting/field trip. All seemed to agree that it would be a trip of interest. This would be to Lone Oak Winery in either April or May depending on when they could fit us into their schdule. The cost per member would be $5. Plans to be made when confirmed as to whether we would ride share - volunteers - Sue from Cleburne, Esther from Burleson. Sue to post a note at the library to let public know we will be holding meeting at winery when we do this. Emma Sheard from Emma's Bloomers to speak at March meeting.
It was brought up that we needed new copies of the tri-fold for our booth at the Master Gardener's Show. Need add on with calendar of meeting events if possible.
Meeting closed.
