Minutes of Johnson County Herb Society April 18, 2009 Johnson County Herb Society Meeting April 18. Four members attended the meeting in the kitchen of the Cleburne Public Library. Present were President Sue Morgan, Esther Chambliss, Nancy Hagwood and Micki Nellis. Field trips and meeting programs were discussed. Members voted to take a field trip to either Clark Gardens or Chandor Gardens in June. (Bring your own lunch.) Also discussed was a field trip to the Homestead in Elm Mott in September for the Sorghum Molasses festival where they will cut, press and make sorghum syrup. Coming up is the JCHS Plant Sale and Rummage Sale at Sue’s Beauty Shop the 4th Saturday of May. Members are asked to bring at least 12 plants for sale. Plant sale proceeds will go to the herb club. Members are asked to make a recipe card with the name of what you are bringing. Label the plants with what they are and whether sun, part sun or shade. Booth rentals will be available for $5. Anything may be sold. Put your initials and removeable price stickers. 10% of sales under $50 will go to the club, and 15% of sales over $50 will go to the club. Sellers do not have to stay with their booth. Records will be kept and checks mailed. Anything left over at the end of the day will be given to Good Will if not picked up. Bring your own tables and chairs if you want to sit. Esther shared tips on growing plants. Use water drained from tuna or other fish to put on houseplants. Also use Starbucks Coffee grounds. They are free for the asking from Starbucks. Members adjourned to go to the Herbs and Roses talk at Weaver’s Plant Nursery. They were joined by member Laura Smargiasso. After the lecture they toured Micki Nellis’ rose trellis and backyard. Esther discovered the backyard had all the qualifications for a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Micki Nellis, JCHS Secretary
