The Johnson County Herb Society met at the Cleburne Library at 10 a.m. August 19. President Esther Chambliss passed out to each member 12 complimentary tickets and 10 flyers for the Herb Symposium set for October 28. Members may pass out as many yellow complimentary tickets as they like. Vendors will be given white complimentary tickets to pass out to their customers. The show is already paid for. The goal is to get as many attendees as possible and new members for the Herb Society. There will be no pre-sold tickets. All ticket sales will be on site at the show. Esther reported that her husband obtained supplies for the hospitality room from a rejected freight shipment. It includes 250 packets of silverware and boxes of cups in two sizes. Fourteen vendors have signed up. Three vendors will have plants to sell: Esther Proctor of ENR Herb Farm in Weatherford and Mineral Wells will have two booths of plants; Baby's Nursery will bring fall herbs and Johnny Jump Ups. Mann's Farm and Ranch of Cleburne will have a booth. Debra Moore is in charge of the September program. She is thinking we might go to Cleburne's botanical garden and present the check for the donated park bench. More details will follow. Pat Kreiner of the Wild Bunch writers will do an article on the Herb Society just before the show. Jo Anne Boudreau will advertise it on her radio show. It was decided that the cookbook will not be ready to sell at the symposium. Many of the recipes still have not been taste-tested, and it was thought that a quality product is more important than meeting a hurried timetable. Esther asked that everyone signing up to work at the show leave themselves time to hear their favorite speaker. Members went on a field trip to Turkey Crossing (formerly Count's Feed Store). Board Meeting after Turkey Crossing Tour Ideas for the cookbook were discussed. Sue Morgan suggested adding a cookbook "Sauces, Salsas, Syrups and Seasonings." It was discussed that Salads might be an easier cookbook than Desserts, and that it could be ready for the spring JCMGA show. Sue Morgan volunteered to walk across the stage before each speaker dressed up as a Salad and wearing a sandwich board saying "Coming Attraction - JCHS Herbal Salad Cookbook." Possibly other club members can walk around during the show wearing the sandwich board. Sally Porter is in charge of the hospitality room. Micki Nellis will provide vendor name tags and signs for the vendor tables so they know where to set up. A vendor supply box will be available, containing such items as staplers, staples, Marks a Lots, typing paper, safety pins, duct tape, making tape, and paper clips. Micki Nellis will send postcards announcing the show to people who signed up at the JCMGA show in the spring. A comp ticket will be included on the back of the postcard with the show logo. Micki will also rent a portable sign and check on the marquee at the civic center, as well as do a publicity campaign. If members can make something to sell, they should make 3 items and the club can take orders. It might be possible to video the speakers if we have their permission. We could then replay the videos as a herb club program.
