Minutes of Johnson County Herb Society November 15, 2008

Seven members met November 15 at the Cleburne Public Library.  Esther Chambliss chaired the meeting.

Debra Moore motioned and Sherry Stanford seconded that the club be run by a board instead of an executive officer. The motion passed unanimously. The board will consist of the president, secretary and treasurer.

Debra Moore motioned and Nancy Hagwood seconded that Sue Morgan be chosen as president. The vote was unanimous in favor.

Other officers elected by acclamation were Esther Chambliss, treasurer, and Micki Nellis, secretary.

Esther reminded everyone that there are no dues for 2009 in celebration of the herb club’s fifth anniversary. Dues will resume in 2010.

Sherry Stanford motioned and Esther Chambliss seconded that the club donate 3 items to the McGregor Park botanical garden: a tree, engraved brick, and bird house. Cost of all 3 items will be less than the $500 already budgeted. (Ornamental tree, $150; engraved brick for walkway, $50; Birdhouse, $150).

The group agreed to again donate diapers to the Cleburne Pregnancy Center for Christmas.

The club has donated a pot of basil to the library, as well as the white wrought iron bench in the foyer. Nancy Hagwood made a gift basket of herbal teas, mugs, etc which the library sold at their November book sale for $50.

Sue Morgan suggested the Christmas luncheon be held at the Purple Turnip on the third Saturday, which is December 20. She will confirm the time with the restaurant.  Guests are welcome. No business will be conducted.

The Master Gardeners will not have a garden show this year because the Civic Center will be closed. They will have a plant sale instead. Sue and Esther suggested that the herb club have their own plant sale, with possibly a rummage sale also. Vendors’ tables will be $5.

Members should start potting seedlings and plants now for a spring plant sale.

New member Jamie Souders won both door prizes.

Sherry Stanford is moving to Belize . She has pot plants to give away.

Esther brought stoneware clay and supplies. Members made their own plant labels from clay, using stamped letters or freehand letters and leaf imprints to decorate. Esther will fire the projects and bring them to the next meeting.

Sue demonstrated how to make a plant label holder from a clothes hanger.

Treasurer’s Report:

The total in checking account is $1,256.66. The total in the savings account is $501.55.

Raffle and the sale of 2 boxes of note cards for November meeting netted a total of $31.00.
